Honoring our Vets

A little over a month ago we had a celebration in our little community.  It was the WWII reenactment.  I volunteered as the photographer, and as I stood behind that lens, so many feelings rushed into my mind.  It was not the ones that were all dressed up that caused me to feel, it was the ones that sat on the side in wheel chairs, those that were actually there.  The tears in their eyes from remembering the reality of war.  Those that died by their side, and the ones that were never found.
What a neat way to remember those the so bravely fought or gave their lives to serve our great nation.  The very first welcome was the sound of the Bomber fly overhead.  All were silent as we watched the plane growl past.
Soldiers were lining up in formation, getting their guns ready for the battle.  Some standing behind sand bags as if in the trenches.  The little town quickly became a different world.
The sounds of guns firing in bursts, smoke filled the streets, people covering their ears for the loud blasts of the tanks.  It was deafening.
After there were some pretend casualties, the nurses and medics were running through the streets rescuing and coming to the aid of the dear soldiers.
After the battle was over, the vets greeted the people dressed to the period of the 1940s.  You should have seen their smiles, it truly would warm your heart.  I heard a WWII Vet say to a lovely young lady in her little 1940s dress, “If only it were 70 years ago, you would be my lady!”  She grinned from ear to ear.
It was really something to see all the people dressed their finest.  It was a different era.  Men and women had such class.  They took care in their appearance and had such manners.  Our society has come to something very different.  I often see gals in the store dressed in their PJs and messy hair.  Gender neural clothing is in.  Girls wear shirts that take pride in the fact that they don’t care about the messy hair they wear.

Women used to be ladies in every way.  They carried themselves differently.  Their domain was they home.  Watching the young ladies dress up for the day, wow!  They started to carry themselves differently in a dress, with high heels on.  The music, oh the gorgeous 1940s big bands heard in the streets.  The store fronts converted to the period as well, my, I was taken on a trip in my very soul.  I felt like I was transported.  Time slowed down.  It was relaxed and I think it is safe to say, EVERYONE wanted that time to linger.

Then they started a grand parade with more bombers flying past, marching band, and vintage vehicles holding our precious vets.  It was amazing!
This was a day I will forever remember and a day that we all stopped for a moment to remember all those that served our country young and old.  Hearing grand stories of valor from little stages they made, brought tears to all of our eyes.  If anyone wants to see this REMEMBERING WWII, you ought to plan a visit to Linden TN in September next year.  It will be well worth your time to come and see it.  God bless our vets!  And Lord bless the families of those that lost a loved one serving our country.

This is beautiful! So inspiring, really. What a great way to honor our beloved veterans and to show folks what it was like back then. I love the style, too! I wish everyone dressed up nice like that today.

    1. Agreed heartily….where are the lovely appearances of old on women today? Not there at all….in many cases. This is a pet peeve with me….ugly clothes on women. Maybe I need to start ‘something’ to change it all. I always…or at least 98-99% of the time am ‘dressed’ when in pubic, at least.
      Also …where may I find a tall man for myself?????? I can’t get short…

  2. Blacks had no rights. Women could be paid less than men. Girls couldn’t play sports in school. Yes, it was a better time. And “everyone” had good manners and carried themselves with class. Everyone!
