Components: Although it is commonly referred to as gingerroot, ginger is actually an underground rhizome. A perennial plant native to Asia, ginger is now grown in several tropical countries. It is part of the plant family that includes turmeric.
Overview: Best known for its ability to ease nausea and relieve digestive disturbances, ginger’s abundance of phytochemicals and antioxidants also boost immunity, cleanse the lymphatic system, kill fungal infections, and relieve inflammation and pain. As a culinary spice, in Europe and North America ground ginger is most often used in baking and in desserts. In Indian and Asian cuisines, it is typically used in savory dishes.
Uses: The rhizome can be consumed fresh, dried, or powdered in food, teas, and tinctures. The powder may also be encapsulated.
